Blueberries
Fun & Easy Ways to Eat Your '5 A Day'

Blueberries are a summertime favorite and all you need is one-half cup to count as one serving of your 5 A Day. They are one of nature’s true convenience foods, because all you need to do is simply wash them and pop them into your mouth to enjoy their sweet/tart flavor.

Here are some ways to enjoy blueberries any time of the day:

Breakfast:
  • Top hot or cold cereal with blueberries
  • Add blueberries to pancake, waffle, muffin, and breakfast bread batter
  • Pour blueberries onto low fat yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Pile blueberries into a cantaloupe half

Snacking:
  • Eat a handful of blueberries any time!
  • Make a "super smoothie" with low fat yogurt, blueberries, and your favourite 100 percent fruit juice
  • For a festive summertime drink, drop frozen blueberries in sparkling water or lemonade!
  • Make really blue blueberry smoothies by mixing frozen blueberries with vanilla soymillk, regular milk or low fat vanilla yogurt

Meals:
  • Sprinkle blueberries into fruit salad
  • Top a mixed green salad or pasta salad with blueberries
  • Make a tangy blueberry sauce to serve with chicken, fish or meat
  • Mix blueberries into hamburger meat for a yummy, juicy burger!

Desserts:
  • Use blueberries as a topping for angel good cake
  • Make a blueberry sauce to top fresh fruit, sorbet, or low fat frozen yogurt
  • Serve a beautiful dish of blueberries for dessert
  • For a special treat, enjoy a piece of blueberry pie or cobbler once in a while

Freezing:
  • If you have extra blueberries you can freeze them to eat later. Wash them and let them dry before freezing. Arrange berries in a single layer on a cookie sheet and freeze. After they are frozen, transfer the berries to plastic bags or freezer containers.
