Celery
Packaging & Transportation

At the cooler, the pallets of celery are removed from the truck and placed on a conveyor belt. The conveyor belt transports celery through a shower of cold water. The water is about 32 degrees Fahrenheit which helps cool the celery. Depending on how warm the celery is, this process can take from 20 to 30 minutes.

As part of a food safety program, the water used to wash celery is continually monitored by a computer that adjusts the chlorine and water mixture. This mixture is a lot like the water you drink at home.

After the washing, celery is then stored in a cooler at 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Celery is usually there for 1 or 2 days before being shipped to your local supermarket. It takes about 5 to 7 days for celery to reach your supermarket.

Celery is also shipped to China in a refrigerated boat. It takes about 4 weeks to arrive.

Celery can be stored for 4 to 8 weeks when kept cooled to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
