Kiwifruit
Packaging & Transportation

After harvest, kiwifruit is transported from the field to packing facilities in 250 pound wood bins where it is brushed, graded, and sorted. On the computerized packing line, each kiwifruit is either photographed or weighed to determine the size of the fruit.

After kiwifruit is sorted according to size, workers hand-pack the fruit into trays.

Kiwifruit is inspected, palletized and transported to a pre-cooler where it is cooled down to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Kiwifruit is then transported to a cold storage warehouse where it can be stored for up to 10 months.

Kiwifruit brought to the United States is loaded in refrigerated containers and transported by ships that are temperature cooled to 32 degrees Fahrenheit. It takes at least 12 days for kiwifruit to reach United States ports from Chile, and at least two weeks from New Zealand.
