Lemons
History

It is thought that lemons are originally from India and were introduced into Italy in 200 AD. By 700 AD, they were being grown in Iraq and Egypt then in China around 1200 AD.
Christopher Columbus brought lemon seeds to the New World during the Crusades in 1493, and the fruit became very popular.
Lemons were being grown in California in 1751 and then in Florida about 100 years later. But the commercial lemon industry didn’t get rolling until around 1849.
Scurvy, a disease caused by a deficiency or lack of vitamin C, became very common among California gold miners. Food was scarce and the lack of vitamin C in the miners’ diet caused Scurvy. When it was discovered that lemon juice, which contains vitamin C, could prevent scurvy, the demand for lemons increased and additional lemon trees were planted to meet demand.
