Peaches
Packaging & Transportation

Genuine tree-ripened peaches are too fragile to ship long distances, so peaches are harvested when they reach the mature-hard stage.

At this point, they have developed enough sugar so that when they soften, they will be sweet and delicious!

In the orchard, peaches are picked from trees, placed in large bins, then transported to packinghouses where the peaches are hydro-cooled or air cooled. Hydro-cooling is when warm produce is cooled directly by chilled water. Then the peaches are released o0nto a conveyor belt for sorting, defuzzing, grading, sizing, and packing.

Even though the peaches are hard at this point, they are still fragile. Because of this, they are often packed in boxes with special plastic liners that have a cupped area for each peach. In some cases, peaches are individually wrapped in paper to further protect hem during transportation.

Boxes of peaches are stacked on pallets, and pallets are loaded with forklifts onto tricks for transportation to wholesalers and supermarkets across the country.
