How to Select & Store

Pineapples are picked when ripe and therefore do not ripen after harvest. Select pineapples that are fresh looking and heavy for their size.

The color of the shell does not determine the sweetness of the pineapple. Deep green crown leaves are a good sign of freshness.

Many people think that if the leaves can be pulled out easily, the pineapple is ripe – but this is not true! So don’t pick on pineapple leaves, they don’t pick on you!

Avoid fruit that is old looking, dry or with brown leaves. And don’t choose bruised fruit or those with soft spots.

Did you know you can also get fresh pineapple that has already been cut? Yep! This type of fresh pineapple can be found in the produce department. It makes eating fresh pineapple very easy and convenient.

When you bring a whole fresh pineapple home form the market, you can either eat it right away or refrigerate it for 2 to 4 days. Once you cut a pineapple, you should store it in your refrigerator. It will last a couple of days if stored in a tightly covered container.
