Potatoes can be kept in a brown, perforated plastic or burlap bag. When storing potatoes, place an apple in with them to help stop sprouting. Remember to check on them periodically and remove potatoes that have sprouted or softened.
When stored properly, potatoes will keep for up to two months. Don't store potatoes with onions. Onions produce and give off a natural gas that quickens the decay of potatoes. Also, potatoes release a natural gas that speeds up the decay of onions too.
Did you know that warmer temperatures promote sprouting and shriveling? As potatoes age, they begin to sprout, but can still be used. Just break off the sprouts before preparing them your favorite way.
