Experts believe that apple trees first grew thousands of years ago near a city now called Alma-Ata in the country of Kazakhstan. It is believed that apples were grown in Neolithic times, when ancient cave dwellers lived. Apples date back so long ago that they are mentioned in the Bible and in the histories of ancient nations.
In 300 BC, the Greeks and Romans grew this delicious fruit and then introduced it to England when they conquered the country. After America was discovered by Christopher Columbus and people began to move to the New World, they brought with them apple seeds and trees. It is believed that John Endicott, one of the first governors of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, brought the first apple trees to America in 1629. |
